Leos love to romp outside. Ticks, Mites and Fleas are mentioned here because of this. Leos are no more susceptible to these parasites than any other dog. They do, however, love to be outdoors, in fields, in the woods, bounding through puddles.
Ticks
Ticks are commonly found on grassy areas, scrub, and woodland areas. They can attach themselves to dog, cats, sheep, cattle, goats, deer, and also to humans. The visible signs of a tick is a grayish swelling on the skin. Take a close look at the swelling point and you will see the legs of the tick (if it is in fact a tick). The head and the rest of the tick are buried into the flesh. Use commercially available tick products to get rid of them. Don't try to pull it out.
Mites
There are different types of mite. Some burrow into the skin, others live on the skin. All mites cause an allergic skin reaction (dermatitis). One of the first signs of troubles with mites is increased scratching and or hair loss around the ears. Be aware of the warning signs of mites and take appropriate measures.
Fleas
Most people know something about fleas. There are a large number of products available to prevent fleas and another large number of products dedicated to eradicating a flea infestation. The key thing to remember is that treating ONLY your Leo for fleas is NOT ENOUGH. You must treat areas in your home as well. Fleas will not just "go away" so ignoring them is not an option. Be aware of the warning signs of fleas and take appropriate measures.
Worms
As soon as you get your new Leo, check up on the worming done. Worms can affect your Leo's growth as a puppy so be sure to follow up on all worming.
Worms that are called worms but are not worms
What is called a worm but is not really a worm at all? The Ringworm. The ringworm is very contagious (not just to other dogs, but to people, especially children). Ringworm is actually caused by a fungus. The spores can come from almost anywhere.
