The Leonberger is steady and affectionate and has a lively nature. Loving and steadfast, stable and calm, the Leonberger just loves everyone. Their intelligence is extraordinary; their loyalty and love for their families is unparalleled. Their sheer size as an adult makes them a deterrent to unwanted visitors in your home.

Most are considered highly trustworthy and have incredible patience, even with the most obnoxious children, while but there are some that are not as patient. Most of these dogs can take bad behaviour in stride. If the situation becomes too intense, you will find that instead of showing any aggression, the Leonberger simply walks away. Leos tend to be very size conscious. They will greet your adult friends with a wag and a lean (some could be nick named "Lean-On-Bergers"). They will greet children much differently, often getting down to or below their level with a very gentle greeting.

The Leonberger does not respond very well to harsh training-methods; training requires patience. Leonberger wants to please, and responds well to training. The Leo is a gentle giant who can be serious, intelligent and brave, as well as playful and lively.

As with any breed the Leonberger can get along with other dogs provided that you make the effort to socialize early and well. The Leonberger is more agile than many other giant breeds.

Your Leonberger will grow from a cute and cuddly teddy bear puppy into a very large and imposing adult dog. Owing a Leonberger comes with the responsibility to properly train and socialize the dog. By following recommended training steps and socialization you will end up with a very large, and gentle canine companion.

Leonbergers are people dogs. They thrive in an environment where they can be part of a family. Despite their size, Leos tend to travel very well. Be sure to include your Leo in family activities.
