The way to help keep your Leonberger healthy and happy is to recognize then he or she is feeling "off". This is part of being an attentive owner. You should get to know your Leo. What is his gait when he walks or runs? Pay attention to the eyes, ears and mouth, feet, appetite, energy, and even bowel movements. Run your hands over his body. Know where his bumps and lumps are. Know what's normal and usual for your dog. If you know what's normal and usual then you will be much more able to detect when things start to go wrong.

Nearly every breed has some known hereditary defects. Other problems can still occur in any dog and could be either a hereditary factor or simply a predisposition to the condition. Careful selection and breeding can minimize the risks associated with the health issues outlined in this section. It's always a good idea to ask your breeder about the bloodlines of the Leo you are considering. This will help you make choices about the risks of known defects.
