![]() There are some eye defects that are genetic in origin. Cataracts are uncommon in Leos but are genetic in origin and if you intend to breed your Leo or if there is evidence of Cataracts in the Leo's bloodline then the dog should be tested annually. Another genetic defect that has been found in some Leo bloodlines is inward (Entropion) and outward (Ectropion) turning of the eyelid. This can be corrected surgically. Because of it's genetic nature dogs with this condition should not be used for breeding. Dogs with Ectropion (untreated) are prone to develop allergic or bacterial conjunctivitis-inflammation. For dogs with Entropion the problem is usually evident before a year of age. Discomfort from entropion will cause increased tearing and squinting. Eventually the inward turned eyelid can cause ulceration of the cornea and can impair vision. Back to General Health |
