Infectious Diseases
- Distemper: Distemper is controlled by inoculation. Your Leo will need an injection at 6-8 weeks, then at 12 weeks, then a booster every year. Keep up with the inoculations to help keep your Leo distemper free.
- Canine Leptospirosis: This disease is bacterial. It's spread by contaminated urine. Certain types can cause sudden death in puppies. Other types will "just" make your Leo very sick. Vaccines are available and should be included in the inoculations that your dog receives every year.
- Canine Parvovirus: This disease can also cause sudden death in puppies. Again, this disease is preventable by inoculation.
- Infectious Canine Hepatitis: Again, not to terrify you, this can cause sudden death in puppies. This is a viral type of disease (excreted in feces, urine and saliva) and also can be avoided with annual vaccination.
- Kennel Cough: If you've ever taken a dog to a kennel then you know something about Kennel Cough. This is sometimes called Canine Bordertella. This disease is bacterial and completely preventable with the appropriate inoculation. Some people believe that dogs can get Kennel Cough only at a kennel. This is incorrect. Anywhere that dogs are in an enclosed area and breath the same air is a risk area.
- Rabies: Probably everyone has heard about Rabies. Rabies is viral and most often passed by saliva (from a bite). This virus is preventable by inoculation.
These diseases are mentioned here to give you an idea of the things that can make your dog sick and to show that all of them are preventable. Keep your Leo's inoculations up to date.
